- Child Labor
Child labor has been and continues to be a major issue across the world. Child labor began right from the pre-industrial era where childhood wasn’t even a known concept. It existed throughout the industrial revolution period as well and is still not eradicated. In fact, the numbers by International Labour Organisation (ILO) certainly reveal Child Labor is still far from being eliminated from the planet. The latest reports by ILO show 1 in 10 children are involved in child labor globally. Currently, more than 152 million children are victims of child labor, including both boys and girls. Though there have been major declines since the late 19th century, the numbers are so big that the improvement fails to make a difference. The term Child labor means the exploitation of children under a legally specified age by using them as workers in any form that has a harmful impact on the physical, mental, social, or moral growth of the children. It includes the work that hampers the schooling of a child with complete abandonment from attending school or partially with heavy workloads.
Such exploitations of children under legally prescribed age which varies from 14-18 for different forms of work in different countries are legally restricted, leaving some forms of work as exceptions like a child artist, some other positive works that do not have the negative intent mentioned above. There are several big industries and companies having thousands of children working for them. With several thousands of employees, it is possible that it goes unnoticed by the authorities of such gigantic companies. However, it is imperative to prevent child labor to protect the companies and factories from a bad reputation and by violating fundamental human rights, plus paying for the serious repercussions. A thorough ID verification prior to selection of employees/workers can easily identify underage kids for the specific work, thereby preventing child labor. ID verification procedures involving validating the individuals with the government-issued identity if made mandatory can help in saving millions of innocent children.
More than half of the 152 million children are working in extremely hazardous industries. Industries like mining, tobacco, explosives manufacturing, pharmaceutical manufacturing, excavations, and likewise have millions of children working for them. Child labor, especially in these industries is a matter of high concern. Since, children are exposed to greater risks of getting injured, while executing the work of mining underground in tunnels that includes various risks of blasts. Chemicals and tobacco industries have huge negative impacts on children, psychologically and mentally. Considering the dangers involved in such occupations, most of them have a government prescribed legal age is 18. Failure to abide by the regulations has severe consequences, from paying huge fines to even imprisonment for a few years.
